The Journey of a Recycled Computer: IT Recycling from Donation to Reuse

With the increasing need for technology in both work and leisure, electronic waste (e-waste) has become a significant environmental concern. Recycling your old computer not only helps reduce this waste but also offers a sustainable solution that benefits both the community and the environment.
At Jamie’s Computers, we ensure that every donated device embarks on a meticulous journey from donation to reuse. Here’s an insight into the life-cycle of your recycled electronics once they arrive in our hands:
Donation and Collection
The journey begins when individuals or organisations decide to donate their unwanted IT equipment. We accept a wide range of items, including laptops, desktops, tablets, and phones. Donors can either drop off their equipment at our Southampton location or arrange for a collection through our online form. For collections of five items or more, this service is free – for fewer items, a nominal fee applies.
Data Security: Ensuring Complete Erasure
Protecting your personal and sensitive information is our top priority. Upon receiving a donated device, our technicians assess the data storage components:
- Removable Storage: If the device contains removable storage media, such as hard disk drives (HDDs) or solid-state drives (SSDs), we extract them for data erasure or physical destruction.
- Non-Removable Storage: For devices with non-removable storage, these electronics will undergo a process similar to removeable storage, or are destroyed if the item is not functioning but may contain data.
For data erasure, we employ industry-recognised software called Blancco. This software allows us to erase storage media to specific industry standards, such as NIST 800-88 Purge and HMG Infosec Standard 5. Drives that successfully pass through this process are then eligible for reuse or resale. Any drives that fail during this process are physically destroyed using a degausser for HDDs and a shredder for SSDs.
Refurbishment and Resale
Once data has been securely erased, the next step is to evaluate the device’s potential for refurbishment:
- Modern Equipment: Devices manufactured within the last eight years are typically refurbishable or are sold in bulk to local, smaller retailers for refurbishment. If the items are refurbished on-site by our skilled technicians, we restore these items to full functionality before selling them through our shop in Southampton, on eBay or directly via our website.
- Older Equipment: Older items are generally recycled, with the initial dismantling process often carried out by individuals undertaking community service.
Dismantling and Recycling
The following process breaks down the recycling process for older equipment which we receive:
- Dismantling: Individuals undertaking community service begin by dismantling the computer into its component parts, such as the motherboard, power supply unit (PSU), cables, and casing.
- Sorting: These components are then separated and placed into categories based on material type.
Collection and Processing: Once we accumulate approximately 11 tonnes of material, we arrange for collection by a specialised recycling facility. These facilities further sort and process the materials, preparing them for reuse in manufacturing and reducing the need for new raw resources.
Community and Environmental Impact
By choosing to recycle your electronics with Jamie’s Computers, you’re making a positive impact in more ways than one:
- Environmental Conservation: Recycling reduces e-waste, conserves natural resources, and minimises the environmental footprint associated with manufacturing new devices.
- Social Contribution: As a social enterprise established by The Society of St James, all proceeds from our operations support initiatives aimed at tackling homelessness in Hampshire. Additionally, we provide volunteering opportunities, helping individuals gain practical skills in a real business environment.
Join Us in Making a Difference
Your old computer can have a new lease on life while contributing to a greener planet and supporting community welfare. If you have electronic equipment that’s no longer in use, consider donating it to Jamie’s Computers.
