From Circuit Boards to Jewellery!
A recent article has shared that the Royal Mint has just opened a new factory in South Wales to extract gold from electronic waste. The factory plans to process up to 4,000 tonnes of printed circuit boards from old devices like TVs, phones, tablets, and computers every year.
The article mentions that “It takes around 600 mobile phones to create one of the rings from the Mint’s 886 collection, weighing around 7.5 – similar to the weight of a £1 coin.” It also says “on average, one tone of circuit boards prouces 165gm of gold!”
This is a great reminder of why it’s so important to dispose of our e-waste responsibly. When recycled correctly, the materials can be reused, cutting down the need for mining new raw materials, which harms the environment.
