What is the digital divide?
At Jamie’s Computers we want raise awareness about the Digital Divide…
What is the Digital Divide?
The digital divide is where there is unequal access to digital technologies. This includes the use of; smart phones, laptops, tablets and the internet. The divide worsens inequality around the access to information and resources.
In the UK the main factors that influences to this divide includes; age, region, socioeconomic status and whether a person has a disability.
Examples of the digital divide include:
- A lack of digital literacy skills – A lack of exposure can impact digital literacy. For example, people from a more senior generation may struggle when using technology as they didn’t grow up using digital devices. Also, children in communities that have limited opportunities, will also have lower levels of digital literacy because the shortage of digital resources.
- Technology availability and affordability – Even when communities have some digital accessibility, have a lack of devices. This can contribute to the digital divide. Even the most affordable laptop/ computer can cost more than some communities and families can budget for. A lot of organisations and companies websites are optimised for desktop computers. This is then putting mobile and tablet users at a disadvantage and which can lead to a decline in income and opportunities.
- Education – Pupils and students are increasingly expected to use technology, such as laptops and computers, for their schoolwork. However, this reliance on technology is negatively affecting the academic performance of those without access, widening the achievement gap between them and their peers who do have the necessary resources.
- Essential Information and Opportunities – The impact of the divide effects many aspects of our lives. Everything from health information to finding a new job. The new digitalised world is great for providers and employers, but it is making it increasingly difficult for some to be able to access the information/ resources they need.
This is also negatively affecting the homeless, as they are unable to access the resources and support needed to rebuild their lives. In today’s world, digital access shouldn’t be considered an optional luxury, especially when it plays such a crucial role in all aspects of life. Its important that we highlight the impact on the homeless as Jamie’s Computers are a division (project) of The Society of St James, a homelessness charity based in Southampton and Portsmouth.
