Continuing with our “Tech Through Time” segment, we’re excited to delve into the fascinating evolution of the computer. As Jamie’s Computers, we find it especially fitting to explore this topic and reflect on how far computing technology has come…
Starting with the Abacus – 2700BC.
The Abacus consists of beads on rods and was used to do basic arithmetic calculations. It also was the first counting machine and served as a foundation for future computational devices.
First Generation – Vacuum Tubes (1940-1956)
The 1940s saw the electric computer, this included the ENIAC – Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer. These machines used vacuum tubes and punched cards to allow data processing. The first generation computers relied on “Machine Language” and this is the fundamental programming that computers understand.
Second Generation – Transistors (1956-1963)
Transistors replaced bulky vacuum tubes, which made making computers; small, faster and more reliable. Second generation computers still counted on punch cards for input and print outs. When the Programma 101 was released it changed everything. It gave a desktop computer that anyone could use.
Third Generation – Integrated Circuits (1964-1971)
When third generation computers came about they started using Integrated Circuits. Integrated Circuits made the computer more reliable and fast. It required less maintenance, it was smaller in size, more affordable and generated less heat. Also, punch cars were replaced with mouse and keyboard.
Fourth Generation – Microprocessors (1972-2010)
Intel brought out the worlds first commercially available microprocessor, Intel 4004, which laid the foundations for the personal computer. IMB’s Personal Computer marked the start of the personal computer and set industry standards.
Steve Jobs, brought also, introduced the first Macintosh computer in 1984. Then the iMac G3 launched in 1998.
World Wide Web (WWW) – (1991)
In 1991 Tim Berners Lee invented the World Wide Web. This, of course, transformed communication and ways to access information. It made the internet user friendly and accessible to many.
Mobile Computing (2000s – Present)
The invention of smart phones and tablets changed computing into a complete mobile experience.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is still very new and is still in development. Some AI Technologies is emerging and being used; voice recognition or ChatGPT.
It’s amazing to see how technology has grown and evolved over time—and it’s still changing! We’d love to hear from you: what was your first ever computer? Share with us in the comments!
